Those who favor European unification should take criticisms of its political flaws very seriously. Doing so is the only chance to ensure that a united Europe, whatever form it takes, will be democratic, as well as economically beneficial. That is why Europe needs Britain: not as an offshore center of banking and commerce, but as a difficult, questioning, stubbornly democratic partner.

Ich sähe es ähnlich: Solange Frankreich nur Kreaturen wie BHL hervorbringt und Deutschland nur Historiker, solange brauchen wir die Ashs und Burumas aus England. 
„‚Britischer Intellektueller‘ – ein Widerspruch in sich?“, S. 421-424. Garton Ash stellt fest, daß Intellektuelle (zumindest der Begriff „Intellektueller“) in England weniger wohlgelitten sind als auf dem europäischen Kontinent, namentlich natürlich als in Frankreich.
Man muß gar nicht mehr nach unten schauen, es ist einfach klar, daß das mal wieder aus der FAS stammt – die FAS ist sozusagen das Blog der FAZ.
